Root canal treatment in Lahore is how that infection is removed so the pain stops and the tooth itself can stay in place. Most people arrive expecting the worst, having heard stories from relatives. In practice the visit is done under local anesthetic, and the discomfort people remember afterwards is almost always the toothache that brought them in, not the treatment.

What root canal treatment actually is

Root canal treatment removes the infected or dying pulp from inside a tooth, cleans and shapes the narrow canals in its roots, and seals them. The outer tooth stays. It is a repair of the inside of your own tooth rather than a replacement of it.

Does a root canal hurt?

This is the question almost every patient asks first, so it deserves a straight answer. The tooth is fully numbed with local anesthetic before anything begins, and most patients describe the appointment itself as no worse than having a filling. Where discomfort does occur is usually in the first two or three days afterwards, as the ligament around the root settles, and it normally responds to ordinary painkillers.

A badly infected tooth can be harder to numb, so tell your dentist if you still feel sharp sensation. More anesthetic can be given, and occasionally the treatment is staged over two visits with a dressing in between to calm the infection first.

Who is a good candidate

Root canal treatment suits you if:

The pulp is inflamed or infected but enough solid tooth structure remains
The tooth can be restored afterwards, usually with a crown
The surrounding bone and gum are reasonably healthy
You are willing to return for the crown, which protects the work

It is not the right answer in every case. Your dentist may recommend extraction instead when:

The tooth is split vertically down the root
Decay extends far below the gum, leaving nothing to build on
Severe gum disease has already loosened the tooth
The root is badly resorbed or the canals cannot be negotiated

How long do treated teeth last?

The evidence here is genuinely reassuring. A long-term observational study following 312 patients and 598 root-treated teeth reported tooth survival of 97% at 10 years, with endodontic success of 93% over the same period, and 81% survival even at 20 years (Clinical Oral Investigations, 2023).

Two things drive those numbers in practice: the infection being cleaned thoroughly, and the tooth being properly restored afterwards. A well-treated root canal left without a crown for a year is the most common way good work is lost.

How many visits does a root canal take?

Many single-rooted front teeth are completed in one appointment of roughly an hour. Molars with several canals, or teeth with active infection that needs settling first, often take two visits a week or two apart. Your dentist will tell you which applies after the X-ray.

Is it better to just have the tooth pulled?

Extraction is quicker and cheaper on the day, but the gap then needs filling with an implant or bridge to stop neighboring teeth drifting, and that costs considerably more than the root canal would have. Keeping your own tooth is usually the better long-term value where it is realistic.

Why does my tooth still hurt after the root canal?

Mild tenderness for a few days is normal as the ligament around the root recovers. Pain that intensifies after the first week, or swelling that spreads, is not, and should be reviewed. Occasionally a canal needs re-treatment, or the discomfort is coming from a neighboring tooth.

Can a root canal be done while I am pregnant?

Usually yes, and leaving a painful infection untreated carries its own risks. The second trimester is generally considered the most comfortable time, X-rays are taken only when needed and with shielding, and your dentist will check which anesthetics and medicines suit you. Always mention that you are pregnant.

Will the tooth turn dark afterwards?

A root-treated front tooth can darken over time as the dentine changes. This is treatable, usually with internal whitening or a crown or veneer, so raise it with your dentist if the shade starts to bother you rather than assuming nothing can be done.

How soon can I eat normally?

Wait until the numbness has fully worn off, which takes two to four hours, to avoid biting your lip or cheek. After that, eat on the other side and keep to softer food until the crown or permanent filling is in place and the bite has been checked.
