What Are Dental Crowns and Bridges?

A dental crown also called a tooth cap, is a custom made cover that fits over a damaged, weakened, or discolored tooth. It restores the tooth’s original shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are placed on teeth that have been significantly broken down by decay, fractured, or treated with a root canal.

A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth. It is a fixed restoration anchored to the healthy natural teeth (or dental implants) on either side of the gap. These anchor teeth are fitted with crowns, and an artificial tooth called a pontic, fills the space where the missing tooth was.

Crown or Bridge?

The Crown & Bridge Procedure

A dental crown or bridge is typically completed in two clinic visits at DentoCorrect. Here is exactly what happens during each appointment:

Your prosthodontist examines the tooth or gap and takes digital X-rays to assess the remaining tooth structure, bone levels, and bite alignment. A detailed treatment plan including material options and written cost is prepared and discussed with you before any procedure begins.

Consultation & X-Ray

For a crown, the affected tooth is gently reshaped under local anaesthesia to create a precise fit for the crown. For a bridge, the two abutment teeth on either side of the gap are prepared in the same way. Our conservative approach preserves as much healthy tooth structure as possible.

Tooth Preparation

Before taking impressions, your dentist uses a professional shade guide under clinical lighting to select the zirconia or ceramic shade that most closely matches your surrounding natural teeth. This step is critical to the final aesthetic result.

Shade Matching

A precise impression of the prepared teeth is taken with digital scanning. This record is sent to a specialist dental laboratory where your permanent crown or bridge is custom-fabricated to DentoCorrect specifications.

Impressions (Digital or Traditional)

A temporary crown or bridge is placed on the prepared tooth or gap to protect it and maintain your appearance while the permanent restoration is being fabricated in the lab. Temporaries are functional, you can eat and speak normally. Avoid very hard or sticky foods.

Temporary Crown / Bridge Placement

The temporary restoration is carefully removed. The prepared tooth surfaces are thoroughly cleaned to ensure a perfect bond for the permanent restoration.

Temporary Removal & Tooth Cleaning

Your permanent zirconia crown or bridge is placed and checked for precise fit, bite alignment, and appearance. Your dentist asks you to bite on special pressure paper to verify the bite is balanced across all teeth. Micro-adjustments are made until the fit is perfect.

Fit & Bite Check

Once you and your dentist are satisfied with the fit and appearance, the crown or bridge is permanently cemented in place using dental-grade cement. Excess cement is carefully removed and your bite is re-checked.

Types of Dental Crowns

Not all crowns are made equal. The right crown material depends on the tooth location, the level of damage, and your aesthetic preferences. DentoCorrect offers four main types:

Zirconia is the gold standard in modern dental crown materials. Made from zirconium dioxide, a biocompatible ceramic. Zirconia crowns offer unmatched strength combined with a completely natural appearance. They are metal-free, allergy-safe, and crafted to match your exact tooth shade.

  1. Best for: Front teeth (aesthetics), back molars (strength), patients wanting a metal-free restoration, post-root canal protection.
  2. Durability: 15–20 years with proper care.
  3. Procedure: 2 visits (preparation and placement).
  4. Material highlight: Full-contour zirconia for back teeth. Translucent layered zirconia for front teeth.

Using a calibrated professional shade guide, we document your exact current tooth shade before any gel is applied. This gives us a measurable baseline so you can see precisely how many shades of improvement your whitening delivers. We discuss realistic outcomes based on your stain type and we will always be straightforward if your case calls for a different treatment approach.

We apply a light-cured protective barrier to your gums and use a lip retractor to keep all soft tissue completely separated from the whitening agent. This is the step that makes professional whitening painless and comfortable. Without it, as is the case with every home kit, gel contacts gum tissue and causes the burning and sensitivity that gives whitening its undeserved reputation for discomfort.

Types of Dental Bridges

Not all dental bridges are made equal. The right bridge type depends on the location of the missing tooth, the condition of the surrounding teeth, and your functional and aesthetic needs.

The traditional bridge consists of one or more pontics (artificial teeth) anchored by crowns cemented onto the natural teeth on either side of the gap. This is the most widely used bridge type and is suitable when healthy natural teeth are present on both sides of the missing tooth. It replaces one or two missing teeth with natural abutment teeth on each side and are durable for 10–15 years with good oral hygiene.

Zirconia crown prices in Pakistan typically start from PKR 30,000 per unit, depending on the material, clinic, and city. PFM crowns generally start from PKR 20,000 per unit. At DentoCorrect, you receive a written cost breakdown at your consultation — no hidden charges. Starting prices are listed in our pricing table above.

A 3-unit traditional dental bridge in Pakistan ranges from PKR 70,000 to PKR 120,000 depending on material, city, and clinical complexity. Zirconia bridges sit at the higher end due to material quality and durability. At DentoCorrect, your bridge cost is confirmed in writing at consultation — with no surprise laboratory fees added later.

A zirconia crown at DentoCorrect can last 15–20 years with proper oral hygiene and regular check-ups. PFM crowns typically last 10–15 years. Longevity depends on how well you care for the crown, whether you grind your teeth, and the tooth's location. Your DentoCorrect dentist will monitor crown margins at every 6-monthly check-up.

No. The tooth is completely numbed with local anaesthesia before preparation. Most patients feel only mild pressure during the procedure. After the anaesthetic wears off (1–2 hours), some mild sensitivity is normal and settles within 1–2 weeks. If sensitivity persists beyond two weeks, contact your nearest DentoCorrect branch — this is easily investigated.

At DentoCorrect, crowns and bridges are typically completed in 2 visits. Visit 1 covers tooth preparation, shade matching, impressions, and temporary placement. Visit 2 (7–14 days later) covers the fitting and permanent cementation of your crown or bridge. Implant-supported bridges require additional time for the implant phase before bridge placement.
