What Is a Composite Filling?

A composite filling also called a tooth-coloured filling is a modern dental restoration made from a blend of resin and fine ceramic particles. It is used to repair teeth affected by decay (cavities), chips, cracks, or minor fractures.

Unlike traditional silver amalgam fillings, composite resin is shade-matched to your natural tooth colour, making the restoration virtually invisible. The material bonds directly to the tooth structure, requiring less removal of healthy enamel and preserving more of your natural tooth. At DentoCorrect, we use only mercury-free composite materials that meet international safety standards — the same standards upheld across our ISO-certified clinics in 7 cities.

Composite Filling Procedure

At DentoCorrect, a composite filling is typically completed in a single visit of 45–60 minutes. Here is what happens during your appointment:

Your dentist examines the affected tooth and takes a digital X-ray to assess the depth of decay and confirm the health of the surrounding nerve and bone. This ensures the correct treatment plan before any procedure begins.

Examination & X-Ray

A topical numbing gel is applied to the gum first, followed by a gentle local anaesthetic injection. This completely numbs the area so you feel no pain during the procedure — only mild pressure at most. The numbness typically lasts 1–2 hours after the appointment.

Local Anaesthesia

Using precision dental instruments, your dentist removes only the decayed or damaged tooth structure. Our conservative approach means we remove as little healthy tooth as possible — protecting your tooth’s long-term strength.

Decay Removal

Before placing the filling, your dentist uses a shade guide under clinical lighting to select the composite resin colour that most closely matches your surrounding natural teeth. This step is what makes the final result virtually invisible.

Shade Matching

The cleaned cavity is treated with a bonding agent, and the composite resin is applied in thin, controlled layers. Each layer is precisely shaped to restore the natural contours of the tooth.

Composite Placement & Bonding

Once fully set, the filling is trimmed and shaped to fit your natural bite. Your dentist will ask you to bite down on special paper to check alignment, making adjustments until the bite feels completely comfortable. The surface is then polished to a smooth, natural finish.

Composite Filling Aftercare

A composite filling hardens completely the moment you leave our clinic — there is no extended setting time. However, following these aftercare guidelines will help protect your new restoration and prevent sensitivity:

Immediately After (0–2 Hours)

First 24 Hours

Long-Term Care

  • Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss daily — gently around the filled tooth to prevent new decay forming at the margins
  • Avoid biting fingernails, pens, or chewing ice — these habits can chip composite resin
  • Attend your 6-monthly check-up at DentoCorrect so your dentist can monitor the filling’s condition
  • If you grind your teeth at night (bruxism), ask your dentist about a night guard — grinding can significantly shorten the lifespan of filling

FAQs

Composite filling prices in Pakistan typically range from PKR 8,500 to PKR 12,000 per tooth, depending on the number of surfaces involved, cavity depth, and clinic location. At DentoCorrect, prices start from PKR 7,000 per filling. You will receive a written cost breakdown at your consultation, no hidden charges.

With proper oral hygiene and regular check-ups, composite fillings typically last 7–10 years. Longevity depends on the location of the filling (back teeth face more chewing force), your brushing habits, and whether you grind your teeth. Your DentoCorrect dentist will monitor your fillings at every check-up.

No. The area is completely numbed with local anaesthesia before treatment begins. Most patients feel only mild pressure. After the anaesthetic wears off (1–2 hours), some temporary sensitivity is normal and typically resolves within a few days. If pain persists beyond one week, contact your dentist.

A single composite filling appointment at DentoCorrect takes approximately 45–60 minutes from anaesthesia to final polishing. Multiple fillings may take longer. The procedure is completed in one visit — no second appointment required.

Because composite fillings harden immediately under the curing light, you can eat as soon as the anaesthetic wears off (usually 1–2 hours). Avoid very hard, sticky, or chewy foods on the treated tooth for the first 24 hours to protect the new restoration while your bite settles.
